Comunità is a labor of love created to spark community through wine while honoring the communities that shape us.
Proprietor David Drummond is a Californian through and through. The son of a career Army pilot and Tuskegee Airman, his family settled in an Italian-American neighborhood in Monterey when he was a toddler, and he has lived in Northern California ever since. The rich history, cultural diversity and physical splendor of California has always inspired him, and his love for California is the driving force behind his wine journey, starting with frequent trips to wine country and ultimately leading to his decision to become a winegrower in Sonoma County. A firm believer in the proposition that wine is a journey best experienced with others, he started Comunita to celebrate the power of wine to forge connection and foster community.
While Comunità is a reflection of David’s childhood, the brand began through his friendship with Sonoma County native Sam Bilbro. Sam and David met through Idlewild (the winery founded by Sam), and became fast friends over their love of Italian wines, vineyards, and dreaming of a more inclusive wine community.
Sam is a fourth generation winemaker with a long history of making Italian varietals in the region. Sam reimagined Las Cimas with David over a multi-year grafting project which led to Comunità. Sam believes great wines begin with healthy soils and a vineyard first approach followed by simple winemaking techniques.
